Thorsil of Sweden - Swedish Company with Effective Salt-based Silage Agents
Thorsil of Sweden is a Swedish company that manufactures salt-based silage agents. The agents have been carefully tested for many years and are very effective. THORSIL are concentrated silage additives with a broad range of protection. With four ingredients, which work together in both the fermentation process and against heating. If you remove one ingredient, the protection changes significantly.
Other advantages are that the agents do not cause corrosion on machines and are safe to work with, i.e. easy to handle.
At Thorsil, we are constantly doing research of new agents and raw materials in our own laboratory where we carry out tests together with farmers on the ensiling and heating process.
The difficulties with producing silage
Producing a good silage is a challenge. An effective silage agent should be able to perform a good fermentation but also protecting the silage against heating during feed-out. The aim of the fermentation is to lower the pH value of the silage in the anaerobic silo/bale while preventing the growth of unwanted bacteria and yeasts. Furthermore, it is important that as much as possible of the digestible dry matter and nutritional value is retained.
Stability at feed-out is very much about inhibiting yeasts as long as possible, as they are the organisms that initiate a pH increase and then spoil the silage by heating.
What should a good ensiling agent do?
- Lower the pH-value rapidly by consuming the available sugar
- Produce the right amount of lactic acid
- Inhibit unwanted and dangerous bacteria (e.g. enterobacteria & clostridia)
- Minimize DM losses
- Create stable silage that does not heat up during feed-out, i.e. inhibit yeasts
- Create palatable and digestible silage
